what is the story of Gokarna and dhundhkaari

Once upon a time there was a perfect city on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. There lived a pious, hard-working Brahmin named Atmadeva. His wife's name was Dhundhuli. She was beautiful, well-bred, skilled in household chores, but very talkative, miserly, quarrelsome and took pleasure in others' quarrels. Atmadeva was content with his wife, but he was very sad that he had no children. He also spent half of his wealth in charity, but no child was born.

In the end, being sad, he decided to sacrifice his body and one day silently went to the forest. When he was thirsty in the forest, drinking water from a lake, seeing him sitting motionless, the Brahmin Atmadeva reached near him and kept his head at his feet and started crying bitterly. On the question of Sanyasi Mahatma, Atmadeva told about his suffering and asked the way to have a son.

Seeing his fate line with the power of yoga, the oracle monk said - you do not have a son in your destiny for seven births. Leave the fascination of having a son! This attachment is due to ignorance only. See! Maharaj Sagar and King Anga also had to suffer a lot.

The drought is only in worshiping the Lord leaving aside the attachment for the sake of the son. But Brahmins were getting obsessed with the desire of children. He said- 'If you do not tell me the way to have a son, then I will give up my life right here in front of you.'

In the end, being forced, the Mahatma gave a fruit to the Brahmin and said - 'What to do, your obstinacy is strong but you will not be happy with a son. Because stubbornness against destiny only brings pain. Well, take this fruit and feed it to your wife, it will give birth to a son.

If your wife speaks the truth for a year, lives chastely, shows kindness to the living beings, gives charity to the poor and eats only once, then a righteous son will be born.' Mahatma went away after giving the fruit and Brahmin came home and gave the fruit to his wife. But the goddess of Atmdeva was also wonderful.

She did not eat that fruit, on the contrary she started crying in front of her friend - 'Friend! If I eat fruits, I will become pregnant, my stomach will increase, my appetite will decrease, I will become weak, then how will the household work be done? Perhaps if robbers come to the village, how will a pregnant woman run away?

If the unborn child becomes crooked somewhere, I will die. I have heard that there is great pain in childbirth, how can I, Sukumari, bear it? If I am unable, my sister-in-law will steal my everything. Truth, following toilet rules is also impossible for me.

The woman also feels great sorrow in bringing up the son. According to my understanding, only a sterile or a widowed woman is happy.' In this way, the Brahmin-wife did not eat the fruit by doing mischief. After a few days, the younger sister of the Brahmin-wife came to her,

the Brahmin told everything to her and said - 'Sister! What should I do in such a situation? His sister said- 'Don't worry. I am pregnant, I will give her to you after having a child. You give money to my husband, with this he will give you a child. Till then you stay secretly at home like a pregnant woman.

I will make it famous among the people that my son died at the age of six months. I will come to your house everyday and take care of your son. Give this fruit to the cow for examination.' The Brahmin-wife gave the fruit to the cow and said to her husband - 'I have eaten the fruit.' In time his sister had a son.

Secretly the husband of that sister brought the child and gave it to the Brahmin-wife. Brahmin told her husband - very easily a son was born. What is the place of Brahmin's joy? Son festival was celebrated with great fanfare. The Brahmin named the child Dhundhakari after his mother.

After a few days the cow also gave birth to a human-child. People got very curious about this. This child was very beautiful, bright, but his ears were like a cow. The Brahmin performed the rites of that child as well and named him Gokarna. Growing up, the child Gokarna became humble, virtuous, learned and religious,

but Dhundhkari became a great evil. He stayed away from bathing and other rituals of purity, loved non-edible things, was very angry, ate with his left hand, was a thief, had hatred without any reason, picked up small children and threw them into the well, murderer.

He always used to keep weapons in his hand, used to give pain to the poor and the blind, used to roam around with the Chandalas with a rope in hand and a dog along with him.

By becoming a prostitute, he destroyed all the ancestral property and after beating his parents, he started taking household utensils to sell. Now the sorrow of the mischief of the son has become unbearable for Atmadev. Being sad, they got ready to commit suicide. But Gokarna explained to him that 'this world is a futility'.

There is no happiness here. Happiness is only in worshiping God. Accepting the advice of Gokarna, Atmadev went to the forest. There he devoted his mind to Bhagavad bhakti, through which he finally attained Bhagavallok.

Here in the house, the fugitive started beating the mother regularly that 'tell me where the money is hidden!' Distraught by this daily beating, the Brahmin committed suicide by jumping into the well.

Distracted by nature, Gokarna went on a pilgrimage. Now the smoker has got freedom. He kept five prostitutes at home. Started nurturing them with theft, dacoity, gambling etc. Once a Dhundhakari collected a lot of money by his misdeeds. Seeing the money, the prostitutes got greedy. By consulting each other, they tied the smoker with ropes while he was sleeping one night and killed him by placing burning coals on his face. Then they buried his dead body by digging a pit and they went away with all the money.

After dying, he became a ghost.  When he returned to Gokarna after a pilgrimage and slept in his house at night, then Dhundhakari, disguised as a ghost in various guises, tried to scare him.  By the grace of Gokarna, he was able to speak, knowing the story of his plight from his mouth, Gokarna promised to free him from this plight and finally freed him from the spirit by reciting the episode of Shrimad Bhagwat.
