Hundreds of years ago, at the sacred confluence of two rivers, a devout Brahmin named Kaushik lived. He dedicated every moment of his life to righteous conduct, as prescribed by the scriptures.

His nature was pure, and he followed the rituals of bathing at the confluence and performing prayers three times a day without fail. He was known far and wide for his honest and humble behavior.

Do not get angry, nobody kills anybody

One day, while Kaushik was performing his evening prayers by the riverbank, he saw a few people running towards him. They quickly hid in the nearby bushes. A little later, some dacoits arrived, searching for the same people.

The dacoits approached Kaushik and said, "O sage! You are known for speaking the truth, and you have never lied, even in your dreams. Therefore, kindly tell us where those people have gone." The dacoits' words disturbed Kaushik's mind.

who is blessed

Kaushik thought to himself that it was indeed true that the people were hiding in the nearby bushes. If he didn't tell the dacoits their exact location, he would be guilty of lying. Truth is austerity, truth is religion, truth is justice; he could not hide the truth.

As he was pondering this, one of the dacoits said, "A truth-teller does not delay in speaking the truth. O Brahmin! It is not right for you to hesitate." The dacoits praised him.

After much thought, Kaushik pointed towards the bushes, revealing the hiding place of the people. The consequences of his truthfulness were deadly. Right before his eyes, the dacoits killed the helpless travelers.

Kaushik, who was unaware of the implications of his actions, had spoken the truth. But his truth encouraged injustice and unrighteousness, leading him not to heaven, but to hell.

This story teaches us that a lie, if it benefits someone, is worth a hundred truths. If telling a lie saves an innocent life, then there is no harm in lying.
