Why Abhimanyu Did Not Kill Duryodhana and Dushasana in the Chakravyuha Battle

The 13th day of the Mahabharata war was crucial, as Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna and Subhadra, played a central role in facing the Chakravyuha formation created by the Kauravas. Abhimanyu was brave, skilled, and had the courage to take on some of the most dangerous warriors of his time. However, despite his strength and ability, there are reasons why he did not manage to kill Duryodhana and Dushasana, even though he fought them both in battle.

Abhimanyu’s Limitations in Breaking the Chakravyuha

Abhimanyu knew how to enter the Chakravyuha, a complex military formation that traps the enemy, but he did not know how to escape from it. His father Arjuna had taught him the way to penetrate the formation, but before Abhimanyu could learn the way out, the lesson was interrupted. On that fateful day, he had no choice but to lead the Pandavas’ attack, as Arjuna was away fighting elsewhere. While he was fearless, this limitation ultimately played a big role in his downfall.

Facing Many Warriors Alone

Abhimanyu was left to fight alone as no other Pandava warrior could penetrate the Chakravyuha with him. Once he entered the formation, several powerful Kaurava warriors, including Duryodhana and Dushasana, came forward to attack him. Although Abhimanyu fought heroically and wounded many, including Duryodhana, the Kauravas used unethical means to trap him. Warriors like Karna, Drona, and Ashwatthama also joined in to overpower him. This unfair strategy left Abhimanyu heavily outnumbered and exhausted.

Duryodhana’s Escape

When Abhimanyu faced Duryodhana, he fought fiercely and even injured him. It is said that Abhimanyu’s arrows severely hurt Duryodhana, making it seem like Duryodhana was close to being defeated. However, Duryodhana, being a skilled warrior himself, managed to escape from the battle before Abhimanyu could kill him. This escape gave Duryodhana a chance to regroup, and it was Dushasana’s turn to confront Abhimanyu.

Dushasana’s Attack and the Unfair Battle

When Dushasana fought Abhimanyu, he too was nearly overpowered. But just like his brother, Dushasana did not face Abhimanyu alone. Other Kaurava warriors kept attacking Abhimanyu from different sides, preventing him from focusing on killing either Duryodhana or Dushasana. In the end, Abhimanyu was surrounded, and the Kauravas broke the rules of battle by attacking him all at once. This made it impossible for him to defend himself properly.

Abhimanyu’s Bravery in the Face of Injustice

Despite being outnumbered and trapped unfairly, Abhimanyu never gave up. He fought with all his strength until his last breath. His determination and courage earned him great respect, even among his enemies. However, the combined might of the Kauravas, their unfair tactics, and his exhaustion made it impossible for him to kill Duryodhana and Dushasana during that battle.

Conclusion

while Abhimanyu was certainly capable of defeating his enemies, the unfair and unethical actions of the Kauravas, combined with his isolation and exhaustion, prevented him from killing Duryodhana and Dushasana. His heroic stand, however, remains one of the most inspiring and tragic moments in the Mahabharata.
